It seems common these days to sit in bed watching Netflix on your laptop, or browsing through your smartphone just before going to sleep. Studies have proven that using your smartphone before bed can be detrimental to the sleeping process — even if you switch off at a reasonable hour. Not only is staring at a bright screen in the dark for your vision, it “tells” your brain to not secrete melatonin (the chemical that induces sleep).
The vast majority of people require 7-8 hours of sleep a day, and using devices / watching movies before bed can reduce this to only 5 hours, which can affect not only your sleep, but your health overall. So be sure to shut off your device at least 1 hour before bed to give your body and mind enough time to wind down.
