Have you ever wondered why you’ve been dieting your whole life, but can’t seem to maintain your ideal body weight? I’ve definitely felt the frustrations of trying so hard to lose weight but just getting no where. Or finding very short-term results from drastic crash dieting but then to put it all back on within a few days or weeks.

It can be especially difficult when you are doing all the right things, i.e. eating a relatively clean diet and exercising. But, what if I told you that weight loss is more than just food and body movements? Our modern binge-eating crash-dieting culture has led to a mass market of products and systems that really produce very little results and, just confuses everybody.

The main reason why most people can’t seem to lose weight and keep it off is because they’re focusing on strict diet and exercise regimes, rather than the metabolic and chemical processes that are necessary in order to lose weight. Shakes and weights aren’t going to do zip if your body isn’t in a state that’s optimised to burn fat instead of store it.

Below I have listed the three main influencers of weight loss in regards to how it effects your metabolism to help you discover why you can’t lose weight:

1. Hormones

Hormones are by far, the biggest culprit when it comes to weight gain. Because you can’t ‘see’ your hormonal levels, it often goes undetected. I’ve seen hopeful mums doting over their beautiful babies but despairing at their sheer inability to lose weight. I always tell them to get their hormone levels checked. Throughout our lives, our hormones will always be effected due to the hormones we ingest in meat produce and livestock, the hormone-like effect of soy products and, natural occurrences such as childbearing and breastfeeding. Stress is also a big factor (see point #2). Once you’ve had your hormones checked, just remember that using synthetic hormones such as the pill or any hormone replacement therapy is like playing with fire. I would suggest working in collaboration with both a GP and herbalist/naturopath. I personally have found a highly potent antioxidant to work wonders, as I’ve had a life long battle with cystic acne. It contains the most powerful OPCs that stabilise hormone levels — bilberry, grape extracts, pine bark extracts and citrus extract bioflavonoids. To this day I haven’t had one volcanic pimple since taking it.

2. Stress

Stress is one of the most understated parts of today’s modern living. Quite literally it is killing us. Not only does it have a damaging effect on our health, it causes a series of chemical reactions in our body that impacts how effective our metabolism operates. Stress produces the release of the hormone cortisol and drains the adrenal glands, thus causing fatigue, lethargy, sugar/fat cravings, low immune, depression and… Weight gain. Activities such as exercise, meditation and mindfulness can have a big impact over time. And, when worked in collaboration with other strategies such as diet and nutrition, supplementation and S L O W I N G  D O W N, allows the body and mind to repair itself. But remember, lifestyle changes take time to show effect and doesn’t work like a pill. For the busy body who is working a 40-80 hour week or tired mums who need a pick-up (that isn’t coffee!!!) try Vitamin B Complex to decrease stress, elevate mood and improve cognitive function.

3. Toxicity

There is no doubt that we are living in a chemical world. Everywhere we turn there are chemicals – in our food, drink, water, cars, houses, medicines, soap… Just about everything contains toxins that end up getting absorbed into our body. From the mouth to *ahem* the ‘other end’, our digestive tract will take in up to 13 toxins just from food alone! The precious little finger-like villi that lines the intestinal wall becomes inflamed and therefore does not absorb nutrients, leading to a build-up of toxins and food particles in the gut lining. So, the liver, gall bladder, intestine and colon all stop working properly and hinders an already sluggish metabolism stopping weight loss in its tracks. The digestive system also supports immunity and mood, and essentially is there to rid the body of toxins, but if this isn’t working correctly, can actually reverse your weight loss efforts. Raw food, juicing, probiotics and aloe vera juice can all work together in eliminating toxins in the gut.
